Which Type Of Coffee Beans Are The Best For Turkish Coffee?

By now, I’m sure you realize just how important the grind is for a great-tasting Turkish coffee, but what about the coffee beans? Do you need special Turkish coffee beans to go with your Turkish coffee grinder?

It’s true that some coffee beans are the preferred choice for Turkish coffee drinkers. You’d think that they would have their own Turkish coffee beans, but this isn’t the case; most prefer beans sourced from Brazil.

From my experience, the coffee brand commonly found on supermarket shelves in and around Istanbul and those used by baristas around the city are the Brazil Santos coffee beans.

You can find coffee beans packaged as Turkish like Mehmet Efendi, but funnily enough, these tend not to be a favorite with coffee drinkers in Turkey.

My guess is that the Mehmet Efendi coffee is typically mixed with Robusta beans from South America to keep the costs low and is not 100% Arabica like the Brazil Santos coffee beans, so the taste could be a bit bitter.

Manual vs. Electric Turkish Coffee Grinders

Most of the best Turkish coffee grinders are the manual type, which means you’ll be using a bit of elbow grease to get your whole beans ground down to a fine powder required for a real Turkish cup of Joe.

This is the authentic way of doing things, but there are electric Turkish coffee grinders that will get the job done with a simple push of a button.

However, most electric coffee grinders can’t provide enough power needed to turn your coffee beans into fine flour-like powder adequately.

This means that most electric-powered Turkish coffee grinders are large, I mean huge; they’re more suited to a commercial environment than on your kitchen countertop.

These huge coffee grinders will get the job done, but they will do so with a lot of noise and are only designed for grinding large batches of coffee beans.

For the average coffee addict wanting to brew Turkish coffee at home, I recommend investing in a good manual Turkish coffee grinder.

Sure, you have to break a sweat for that cup of Joe, but all that extra effort with translate over into your final brew.
